Project Abstract 

Return to Zero

Our dependence on technology has shaped our identity and relations. What remains when technology moves back step by step? Return to Zero aims to research this question by means of an interactive card game, where the participants are placed in a regressive technological time period.

Technology eases our lives while creating dependence on it. The effect this has on human behaviour, communication, career options, and decision making is growing.  How does human perception and interaction change if technology systematically regresses? Which role does technology play in defining our core values?

This interactive card game takes the participants back in time. To stimulate discussion, each card calls to the loss pertaining to a certain technology, whereby participants are placed in technological historical periods (Third Industrial Revolution, Second Industrial Revolution and First Industrial Revolution).

Participants experience unease and enlightenment when technology disappears, this emphasizes how technology fundamentally shapes our lives. The resilience of human ingenuity and community is also at play.

This project can be expanded with digital components, broader contexts (culture, geography,etc.), and applied in educational settings to stimulate critical thinking.
